The Undisputed WWE Championship was on the line at Night of Champions as Cody Rhodes defended the title against GUNTHER and Sami Zayn in a Triple Threat Match. The championship bout was made official after weeks of controversy involving all three men.
GUNTHER believed he had been robbed of the title on multiple occasions, first at Clash in Italy and again on SmackDown after Sami Zayn’s actions cost him another victory. The situation spiraled out of control when the restarted title match ended in chaos, leading GUNTHER to demand another opportunity.
Rather than face GUNTHER one-on-one again, Rhodes told Nick Aldis he wanted to defeat both challengers at the same time. Aldis agreed, setting up a Triple Threat Match with the Undisputed WWE Championship on the line at Night of Champions.
Sami Zayn made his way to the ring first to start this main event match. Zayn was the overwhelming favorite, but he was far from alone in this triple threat match.
Everyone fought to get a pinfall, and at one point, Sami Zayn was able to interrupt Cody Rhodes from getting a win at the last minute. After that, Sami and Cody battled it out for a bit. Then Sami was able to nail a Helluva Kick on GUNTHER, but Cody Rhodes interrupted that pinfall to even things up.
After that, Zayn went for a packaged piledriver on Cody through an announce table as a tribute to Kevin Owens, but Rhodes countered it into a backdrop through the other announce desk. After that, GUNTHER sent Cody Rhodes through the other table with two huge powerbombs.
After that, GUNTHER threw Cody in the ring and latched on a sleeper hold. Cody Rhodes didn’t give up, but neither did GUNTHER. Cody fought to stay in the match, but the rope wouldn’t break up the hold in a triple threat match. Suddenly, Sami Zayn jumped in to stop Cody’s arm from falling when the referee checked on him. GUNTHER picked up Sami Zayn after that, but Zayn nailed an Exploder Suplex in the corner and a Helluva Kick for a very close near fall.
Cody Rhodes got back in the match after that and nailed a Super Cutter on GUNTHER. Then Sami hit a Crossroads on Cody before teeing up for a Helluva Kick, however, GUNTHER latched on the Sleeper. Then Cody grabbed GUTHER to hit a double Crossroads. Suddenly, Sami rolled Cody up for a pinfall and won the match to become the new WWE Undisputed Champion. This was Sami Zayn’s 10th championship match, and he finally won the big one 25 years after he started his journey in pro wrestling. The former El Generico is now Undisputed WWE Champion, and Saudi Arabia was very happy to see it happen.
