Sanju Samson’s 87 against Delhi Capitals was not merely a match-winning innings. Chasing 156 on a surface that was not entirely straightforward, CSK lost Ruturaj Gaikwad early. There was enough uncertainty in the game for Delhi Capitals to believe they could stay alive in the contest, especially after the resistance shown by Tristan Stubbs and Sameer Rizvi had dragged them to a respectable total. This was not a chase demanding blind aggression; it demanded judgment and Samson supplied exactly that.

There are batters who dominate a game, and then there are batters who seem to slow it down just enough to make everything around them look simpler than it really is. Sanju Samson belongs firmly in the latter category. What stood out was not just the strokeplay, but the sequence of decisions. He rarely looked rushed. Against pace, he opened angles effortlessly and manipulated gaps with precision. Against spin, his footwork was decisive without being exaggerated. Every movement appeared economical. Every boundary felt earned rather than manufactured.

The assault on Kuldeep Yadav – 6, 6, 4 – was symbolic of the innings itself. There was intent, certainly, but there was also calculation. Samson was not swinging momentum violently in CSK’s favour; he was steadily removing any possibility of Delhi reclaiming it.

That has increasingly become the hallmark of his batting. Samson does not always announce dominance through visible aggression. Often, he exerts it through tempo. Bowlers realise they are losing control before the scoreboard fully reflects it. His partnership with Kartik Sharma further underlined this quality. The younger batter played his role with maturity and intelligence, but Samson ensured the chase never drifted into complication. He absorbed pressure, accelerated when required and finished with authority, striking at over 167 without ever appearing frantic.

And perhaps that is the enduring fascination with Samson as a cricketer. In an era where T20 batting is frequently associated with brute force and relentless disruption, he still makes timing look relevant. He still trusts shape, balance and touch. Even his sixes carry a certain smoothness, as though power is merely the byproduct of rhythm rather than the objective itself.

For years, Samson has occupied an unusual space in Indian cricket discourse; admired, debated, occasionally misunderstood. Expectations around him have always been unusually emotional because his talent has always been unmistakable. But innings like this reveal a cricketer who is evolving beyond the label of potential. There is now greater clarity to his game, greater patience in constructing innings and greater awareness of match situations.

During my visit to Thiruvananthapuram last week, I was taken aback to see efficiency in civic administration that is unmatched. The city is spotlessly clean, there are no potholes, the traffic cops seem fit and competent. We stopped at Pettah junction and spoke to a few locals. The city adores Samson, but in a manner that mirrors his own personality. There are no giant murals at every corner, no overwhelming displays of hero worship, no loud declarations demanding attention. Instead, there is quiet acknowledgement and conversations over chaaya drift naturally toward his batting. Auto drivers mention his latest innings with understated pride. Shopkeepers smile when his name comes up. Much like the city itself, Samson carries a calm self-assurance that does not seek validation.

When you look at the points table, it is startling to see CSK now at 10 points just behind Gujarat Titans who have had their fair share of huffing and puffing. Even RCB is just two points ahead. It seems like the team has found resonance with the calm self assurance of their wicketkeeper-batsman. Has CSK found a template with Samson that they can bank upon going forward?
